Books and Videos Here are some suggested references, books and videos. Some are educational, some fiction. There are several delightful stories written about kangaroos, too many to mention here. Some here have been suggested by others, so I may not have all the details but if you are interested and cannot source them, please ask me and I will do my best. If you have any other suggestions please let me know so I can add them here. One Canadian friend says, " Of course, there is no substitute for the real thing ;-), but until some of us "internationals" can come to the land of Oz to see kangaroos in their own habitat, videos and books can be a welcome resource." BOOKS Staker, L. "The Complete Guide to The Care of Macropods" please see more about this on Lynda's website link mentioned above or some of the content can be viewed at Google Booksearch on the url http://books.google.com Dawson, T. "Kangaroos, Biology of the largest marsupials" UNSW Press 1995, 162 pages, covers evolution, types, social organisation, population structure and dynamics, reproductive biology and behaviour, life history, feeding, physiology and humans. Triggs, B. "Tracks, Scats and Other Traces. A Field Guide to Australian Mammals" Oxford University Press 2001. 340 pages looking at the tracks, scats, and other clues left by different species as they visit areas. Also good photos and descriptions of different bones, skulls and jaws of the different species. Strachan, R. "The Australian Museum, Complete Book of Australian Mammals" Angus and Robertson 1984. 530 pages, covers all Australian mammals, photo and short description of each. Burt, D & McLeod N. "Kangaroos" Houghton Mifflin Australia 1989. 38 pages, photos of different species (including birth of Grey) and short descriptions. Unfortunately out of print, I have been told. Australian Wildlife Protection Council, 'The Kangaroo BETRAYED!' 1999. 79 pages, a collection of articles by different authors, about the plight of kangaroos, facts behind the kangaroo slaughter and Industry, other solutions and ideas about the protection of our kangaroos. Rowe, S. "Caring for Kangaroos…orphaned and otherwise", 2001. 17 pages, a manual on looking after orphaned joeys and beyond. (That one I can get quite easily!) Carter, M. "A Wild Life, bringing up a bush menagerie", Bantam Press, 340 pages. Author stresses that wildlife are not to be domesticated pets. Enlightening book of memoirs and that trading in the poodle for some kangaroos and wombats, is not the romantic life in the country as many would like to believe. Williams, A&R. "Caring for Kangaroos and Wallabies", mainly about smaller kangaroos and wallabies, but also eastern and western greys and big reds. One outlet suggested is the Canadian bookstore chain: http://chapters.indigo.ca (and if it is available there, it would almost certainly be at amazon.com, borders.com, barnes and noble, etc. etc., says my contact!)
