Sponsoroo is a program to encourage interest, education and awareness about kangaroos. It is SINCERELY hoped that people may come to know and understand kangaroos, really love and appreciate them and will ultimately want to help to protect them. Awaken to the superb kangaroo
Through Sponsoroo, people can come to know a Red or Eastern Grey kangaroo of their choice, through photos and correspondence.
Sponsoroo designed and maintains this website. UPDATES, as of Sunday 24th May, 2009 Please visit the Sponsoroo blog http://sponsoroo.blogspot.com/ In there you will find more stories and information about kangaroos. Here are 3 new babies to add to the list of kangaroos available to sponsor. The photos from the left are:- Pip, Kookie, both Eastern Greys and Harry, Western Grey, aren't they just gorgeous xxxx Kookie is a bit special, she is developmentally delayed as you will see in her story.
I am sure you will be aware of the horrendous devastation caused in Australia by the Victorian fires in February and the continuing Queensland/NSW floods. There has been huge loss for everybody including our wildlife and their habitat. If anyone would like to help please let me know and I will put you in touch with the most relevant people. See the photo of the beautiful
female Red up in the top left hand corner of this page? Did you know that the position she is sitting in, is the one a female
Red kangaroo usually takes when
she gives birth? While she is sitting, balanced like so, the embryo joey makes
its way, all by itself without help from mother, from the cloaca, using its
little tiny
hands, up through the mother’s fur and into
the pouch, where it latches on to one of 4 teats. At that stage it is only about
2cm long! It is an amazing feat of nature. Here is a photo of the embryo being born out of mother's cloaca. This photo was taken by Neil McLeod and is scanned from Denise Burt and Neil McLeod’s book “Kangaroos” (1989) Houghton Mifflin Australia.
Also from Neil McLeod and the same book, here is the baby in the pouch, now 2 days old.
Aren't these amazing photos.
It always heartens me when I hear from other people who genuinely love and respect our kangaroos, thank you. They too realise that we must love, respect and look after our precious wildlife and their habitat. We must learn as much as we can about their needs and ways. We must treat each being as an individual as we would within our own species. Each joey I raise, each kangaroo with whom I interact teaches me so much about their own kind and their environment. I realise how blessed I am to have this opportunity. They are precious treasures and I so wish that others would treat them as such. All the paperwork for Sponsoroo is done here in Australia. Please factor that into your time for postage, especially when the Sponsoroo is for a gift. For instance, from here to UK and Europe the post takes about 5 to 7 days, to USA 6 to 10 days . Many thanks. Thank you to everyone for their continuing support and sponsorship or donations, it is very much appreciated. Please continue to visit this spot for further updates. Cheers, Susie.
